Maui is as beautiful underwater as
it is above. Dazzling displays of butterfly fish,
angelfish, tang, and grunts surround you, with needlefish, flounder,
and crabs providing unusual- looking sights. The water is
warm year-round, though in winter you might want to rent a wetsuit if
you plan on snorkeling for very
long. However, if you get cold, it's a good excuse to sun
yourself on the gorgeous beaches!
The best snorkeling on Maui can be
found offshore at Molokini Crater. A submerged volcano, the
crater has been declared a Marine Life Conservation District, and fish
and sealife abound. We didn't snorkel there, but we did scuba
dive, and we can vouch for it's beauty. It does get very crowded
there, so try to get there early. All snorkel tour operators
visit Molokini.
The best sites from shore can be
found, coincedentally enough, where the best beaches are. From
Kihei to Makena, up around Napili Bay, and especially around Olawalu,
Maui offers up some of the best snorkeling anywhere. Just
remember, if you want to see lots of fish, go where there is coral or
rocky areas. Stay away from sandy bottoms, as coral can't grow
there, providing no food or shelter for the fish.
