Maui
may not be the first place you think of when you think of hunting, but
you'd be
surprised at the rugged, uninhabited terrain that awaits you.
The species available for hunting are limited, but the numbers are
plentiful, and the sheer beauty of the situation is something to
behold.
Axis deer,
feral pigs and
feral goats are available for hunting, as are
pheasants,
chukar,
francolin,
quail,
doves, and
wild turkey. The
hunting seasons for each vary, as they do most places, but
the Axis deer are becoming so plentiful and becoming such a problem
that the government has declared open season on hunting them and has
eliminated the bag limit.
To
hunt on Maui, you must first
apply for a hunting license. A license will set you back
$106.50 if you're a non-resident (only $16.25 for residents), and a
hunter education card or
exemption letter. Hunting is allowed from one-half
hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset, and don't forget
your orange vest! Most of the good hunting spots on Maui are on
private land, so it's a good idea to contact a guide who may have a
deal going with certain landowners. You can hunt on private land
without a guide, however, but you'll need the landowner's permission.
