Canoeing and Kayaking on Maui

Kayaking on Maui can be an enchanting experience.  In the winter months, you humpback whales grace the waters of Maui, breaching and singing in all their glory as they gather to calve.  Flying fish, dolphins, and monk seals can also provide wonderful experiences as they play off the hull of your boat.  The water in Maui is in the 70s all year round (expect the warmest water in the summer months), and there are many ways to enjoy it as you can snorkel and scuba dive off your boat.

For newcomers to the sport, West and South Maui provide numerous opportunities for a pleasant cruise.  Along West Maui, Kapalua Bay, Black Rock, Canoe Beach, Olowalu Beach, and Papalaua Beach offer easy access, calm winds, and safe entry.  They also offer excellent snorkeling opportunities for those times when you want to jump overboard and enjoy Maui underwater.  In South Maui, try Ulua and Mokapu Beaches, Holoa Point, Makena Landing and 5 Graves, and Ahihi Bay.

For intermediate skill levels, LaPerouse Bay, Ahihi Beach, Makena Landing and 5 Graves, and Holoa Point in South Maui and Papalaua Beach, Canoe Beach, and Airport Beach on West Maui can offer a little higher degree of difficulty, slightly higher currents and more exposed entry points in exchange for some great scenery and good snorkeling.

For advanced kayakers and canoers, the North Coast of Maui offers breathtaking scenery along with strong trade winds and ocean currents.  This coast is the windsurfing mecca of the world, and with good reason.  The coastline is dotted with waterfalls, off-shore islets, and beautiful campsites.

If you're going boating, make sure you have a lifejacket.  It's required and the coast guard will ticket you.  It is recommended that you plan your trip for morning, as the afternoon trade winds can be brisk.  Don't forget your water, sunscreen, and snorkeling gear!  The links in the table below will help you find gear, tours, and information about kayaking and canoeing on Maui.  If you plan on renting gear or taking a guided tour, after checking out the links below to find what you want, visit our Discounts & Bargains page for great price reductions and deals on even the best tours and boats.
