Night
life on Maui can be hard to come by, compared to the touristy
places in other areas, such as Waikiki or Mexico. The island is
quite a calm retreat for the most part, and what night life exists is
primarily in Lahaina.
We stayed in Kihei, where there was just nothing happening. A
couple of restaurants around had live music a couple of nights a week,
but there were no night clubs or the like.
One mainstay of Hawaiian night life
is the Luau. Unlimited food
and drink along with two to three hours of Polynesian music and
dancing. We attended the
Old Lahaina Luau,
called the best and most authentic luau on Maui, for the tune of $70pp.
By the time you gorged yourself, got sloshed, and enjoyed 2 1/2 hours
of Polynesian dancing, it didn't seem as expensive. We got there
too late for our photo to be taken with the dancers, unfortunately, as
we had just flown back in from Molokai, and had to pick up our
Advanced Open Water scuba diving cards in Kihei before racing up the
coast to Lahaina. The food was excellent (the poi wasn't as bad
as they said), and the drinks kept coming. The dancing was
enjoyable, of course, and we captured a few bootleg
video segments to give you
an idea of what the dancing is like.
