The HP48GX has long been the
backbone of the Land Surveying, Geomatics, and Engineering
industries.
Land Surveyors have relied on the HP48 to run their COGO cards and
total stations, engineers have relied on the HP-48 to store and run
hydraulics and statics formulas, and students have craved the memory
to store custom-made formulas and programs. Now, Hewlett Packard
has chosen to discontinue the HP48GX. Why would they do such a
thing?!?
I'll tell you. It's because
the HP49G+ surpasses the HP48GX in every way. It comes equipped
with a whopping 1.13Mb of on-board memory (compared to 128kb for the
HP48GX), add-on slots, and much more.

The HP49G has now been discontinued,
replaced by the HP49G+, much in the same way the HP48SX was replaced
by the HP48GX, but you can still find them on E-Bay. The HP49G
featured less memory and no expansion slots for not that much less
money, but was introduced before the HP49G+ came out.
Slowly, some software companies are
starting to come out with surveying software that is compatible with
the HP49G+. The main problem is that it lacks the serial cable
interface to connect to most total stations. However, I'm sure
it's only a matter of time before there is an adapter available, or
total stations will start coming with USB or Bluetooth.
