Olallie Lake
On August
26th, we set out for the
Olallie Lake
scenic area for our first camping trip of the year. Olallie Lake
is set in a beautiful picturesque scene with Mt. Jefferson looming over.
The lake is at about 5000 feet of elevation, and is one of over 50 lakes
in the
scenic area. It's located about midway between Detroit and Madras,
Oregon on the Western boundary of the Warm Springs Indian Reservation.
The 17-mile long gravel road is horrible, and nearly beat our Honda car
to death. It was well worth it, however. We camped at Lower
Lake campground, after our reservation at
Olallie Meadows was given away by the staff, at which the trailhead
for the Lower Lake Trail lies. We
hiked past
Lower Lake, which was filled with fish, and on to Fish Lake.
The Pacific Crest trail is nearby, along with trails to Olallie Butte
and many other lakes. Ken and Jeanette brought their RV and their
kids, and Pat, her kids, Salima and us roughed it in tents.
Jeannie and Brian were going to be there too, but couldn't find our new
campsite! We missed you guys! We took rowboats out on Olallie
Lake for some fishing, which was fun, but when the wind picked up, Jeanette
and the kids couldn't row their boat back to shore and were stuck on the
lake for five hours! Below are some photographs we took on our trip.
