Mountain Biking
and Cycling on Molokai
Road biking is discouraged on most of the
Hawaiian Islands, but not so on Molokai. The traffic is light, and
the open expanses and small size of Molokai make for excellent cycling.
Biking is an excellent way to see the island, and less expensive than
renting a car. There are over 50 miles of mountain biking trails
on Molokai as well, with fabulous mountain and ocean views, and exciting
singletrack, oceanside, and desert rides. In his book,
Mountain Biking the Hawaiian Islands, John Alford describes the ups
and downs of such riding areas as Molokai Ranch, The Molokai Forest Reserve,
and Puu O'Hoku Ranch.
Molokai Bicycle
is the only full-service bike shop on the island, but
Molokai Rental Tours and
Molokai Outdoor
Activities also rent mountain bikes and road bikes for around $20/day.
Molokai Ranch offers Mountain Bike Rentals and Tours of its rugged
premises for $25/day rental fee or $35 for a half-day tour.
Molokai
Outdoor Activities offers a "Mountain to the Ocean" tour, and
Molokai Rental Tours
presents a full-day and a half-day bike tour for $45/half-day or $80/full-day.
