ROSE CITY GOLF COURSE
PORTLAND, OR

Rose City Golf Course is a pretty typical example of a publicly maintained course.  The course isn't that attractive except for a a few areas, and was under construction when we last played, so maybe they will be rehabilitating it soon.  The back 9 is considerably nicer and more fun than the front 9 here, in our opinion.  There aren't many discounts for this course, since it is maintained and run by Portland Parks and Recreation.  It's convenient for us to play, though, since it's just right over the I-205 bridge from Vancouver.

ROSE CITY GOLF COURSE - OUR COMMENTS

Maintenance:  The maintenance on the front nine was very poor, with lots of brown grass everywhere and the green grass was dry and pale.  There was still construction going on when we last played here, so it's quite possible that with the new irrigation we hope they were putting in that this will no longer be the case.  The back 9 is much nicer with some truly excellent holes and nice green scenery.

Scenery: The front 9 was quite average - quite a few trees, but very flat.  The back nine was better with some more water and greener trees and grass.  You have a school bordering the best hole on the course, the 14th hole, which kind of detracts from that one, but this side of the course is quite nice overall.

Fun: Most of the front nine is pretty bland - very little water, lots of straight and flat fairways.  The back nine was better, with the 14th and 15th holes being more fun, and a nice little dog leg on the 10th hole was a nice touch.  Overall, not one of our favorite courses.  Lots of tough greens make the short game a challenge.

Safety: The trees lining the fairways do a pretty good job of shielding you from other golfers, but you do have to cross one street.  It is a nicely controlled street with light traffic though.

Staff:  We were running too late to really notice - so I guess they must have been okay.  No hassles of any kind.

Design: They could have done a lot more with this course, we think.  The fairways are mostly long, flat, and straight - very few manmade hazards, and lots of fairways facing each other, detracting from the safety.

Value:  This course is well-priced since the price is controlled by the city, but there are nicer courses nearby for similar prices.

Other Comments:  Hopefully the renovation project will result in a more aesthetically pleasing course.  September is a good time to play here - specials like $16 for 18 holes can be found during this time.
