Scuba Diving on Maui

Maui is home to some of Hawaii's best scuba diving.  The waters are warm, from 70 to 80 degrees depending on the season, but you'll want a wetsuit for sure.  Sandra dove all our dives on Maui with a 3mm full wetsuit and was comfortable, and I dove with a long-sleeved shorty, except on our night dive, where I opted for a full suit.  The divemasters were wearing 7mm suits, however, so I guess it depends on what you are acclimatized to.  

Our only warm water diving experience had been in Cozumel, so that's really all we have to compare it to.  Hawaii has only hard coral, which is much less vibrant and colorful than the soft coral of the Caribbean.  However, you'll have a lot better chance of spotting large creatures such as sharks, turtles, seals, dolphins, manta rays, and even humpback whales.  The fish aren't as plentiful as in the Caribbean, though Molokini Crater comes close, but a large percentage of the fish in Hawaii are found nowhere else in the world.  It's our opinion that the Big Island probably offers better visibility, rock formations, and large pelagics, but that Maui has better fish, and most importantly more whales!
